URL

URL (ang. Uniform Resource Locator) oznacza zunifikowany format odnośników do zasobów (głównie Internetu).

Większości użytkowników sieci URL kojarzy się wyłącznie z adresami stron WWW, format ten jednak daje też możliwość odsyłania do wszelkich innych usług dostępnych w Internecie. Wpisując poprawny odnośnik do okna przeglądarki stron WWW możemy szybko wywołać określoną informacje (o ile mamy sprawne łącze).

URL składa się z rodzaju zasobu/usługi (ang. scheme) dwukropka i części zależnej od rodzaju zasobu (ang. scheme-specific part). Nazwy rodzaju zasobu mogą składać się z małych liter, cyfr, plusa, myślnika oraz kropki. Ze względu na możliwości pomyłki duże litery mogą być akceptowane przez oprogramowanie.

Często oprogramowanie (szczególnie przeglądarki internetowe) pozwala na różne niewłaściwe formy "urli", np. pomijanie //, a także określenia protokołu adres_serwera/sciezka_dostepu.

Tim Berners-Lee created the URL in 1991 to allow the publishing of hyperlinks on the World Wide Web, a fundamental innovation in the history of the Internet. Since 1994, the URL has been subsumed into the more general Uniform Resource Identifier (URI), but URL is still a widely used term.

The U in URL has always stood for Uniform, but it is sometimes described as Universal, perhaps because URI did mean Universal Resource Identifier before RFC 2396.
